The Northwest Herald and Marriage Equality

Note—This is the text of a letter to the editor that I sent today to the Northwest Herald, the primary daily newspaper serving McHenry County, Illinois.

I see newspapers of all political persuasions across Illinois have now endorsed the marriage equality legislation which recently passed the Illinois Senate and is up for consideration in the House.  Publications include the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, Daily Herald, Pioneer Press, Southtown Star, St. Louis Post Dispatch, Journal Register (Springfield), and Peoria Journal Star.

Where is the Northewest Herald?  Don’t you think it is time for your editorial board to catch up with the irreversible tide of history?

Polling now clearly shows marriage equality is supported by a majority of Illinois citizens and adamantly opposed by only 29%.

On behalf of the members of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in McHenry, long a champion of full equality in marriage based on our religious principles of the respect for the inherit worth and dignity of every person, I urge you to remember that there is also a strong and growing support for this across a wide religious spectrum.

It’s your turn to speak up.  Simple justice demands it.

Patrick Murfin,
Social Justice Chair,
Unitarian Universalist Congregation in McHenry
