They didn't even sell the secret... how un-American is that! Rather, they were motivated by the desire to create nuclear parity so that this horrific weapon would never again be used against civilians. Eisenhower refused to pardon them, claiming their actions put millions of lives in danger. However, in the brief 4 year time period where the U.S. maintained a nuclear monopoly, we DID use it against civilians--twice.
