The
award winning documentary The People Speak will be shown at 7:30 pm this Saturday, September 8 at
the Unitarian Universalist Congregation,
5603 Bull Valley Road in McHenry. The program is the first in a series of Movies with Meanings hosted by the
congregation’s Faith Development
Committee.
The
People Speak is a 113 minute film inspired by Howard Zinn’s books A
People's History of the United States and Voices of a People's History of
the United States. The film features the actual words in letters,
songs, poems, speeches and manifestos of rebels, dissenters and visionaries
from the past and present including Frederick
Douglass, Susan B Anthony, Bob Dylan, Langston Hughes, Chief
Joseph, Muhammad Ali, and
unknown veterans, union workers, and abolitionists brought to life by numerous
actors and musicians including Matt
Damon, Josh Brolin, Benjamin Bratt, Danny Glover, Kerry
Washington, Lupe Fiasco, Marisa Tomei, Morgan Freeman, Pink, Rosario Dawson, Sandra Oh, Sean Penn and
many others. Narrated by Howard Zinn himself before his death.
Released in 2009, some clips from
the film were shown at the Democratic
Convention in Denver in
2008. The actors and performers were
shot in Boston, in front of
live audiences at Emerson College’s Cutler Majestic Theatre and at Malibu Performing Arts Center, Malibu, California.
The film will be followed by lively
conversation and fellowship. Popcorn, candy, water and lemonade will be served.
The screening is free and open to
the public. For more information call Janet, 847 542-7678.
