The First Assault by Air—Austrian Drone Balloons Bomb Venice

On August 22, 1849 a British newspaper carried a somewhat garbled account of an unusual attack on Venice.

It fell to—and on—the unlucky people of Venice to be the first targets of bombs dropped from the air in war.  It was on July 15, 1849 and the lovely old city of canals was under siege by the Austrians who were upset that romantic rebels had proclaimed the Republic of St. Marks to establish independence from Hapsburg dominance.  The proud old city, once a world power on its own that nearly dominated the Mediterranean and challenged the mighty Ottomans, was defiantly holding out against a tightening noose in the vain hope that other Italian cities and principalities would rally to her side.  But few of the dynastic houses of Europe had sympathy for any republic after the wave of uprisings and rebellions that swept the continent the year before.

Of course, lighter than air military aviation was not entirely new.  It took the French less than ten years from the time the Montgolfier brothers elaborate hot air balloon first carried passengers over Paris for the edification and entertainment of King Louis XVI in November 1783 and Jacques Charles and the Robert brothers demonstrated a hydrogen balloon a couple of weeks later for them to deploy balloons for military purposes.  Jean-Marie-Joseph Coutelle, Captain of the Aerostatic Corps successfully flew an observation balloon in Flanders during the War of the First Coalition in 1792.  The intelligence gathered from the flight was credited with the French victory in the Battle of Fleurus.

But despite other successful operations Napoleon Bonaparte dismantled the Corps. If he had not he might have learned of his enemy’s movements at Waterloo and history may have taken a very different turn.

In the years since the end of the Napoleonic Wars there was tepid interest in ballooning for observation, but no other nation developed an operational unit.  Some dreamed of using balloons to drop bombs, but the problems of unreliable craft at the mercy of the winds made such applications untenable.

Enter Franz von Uchatius an extremely clever Austrian engineer and artillery officer.  In his career he developed stronger alloys for cannon, worked on smokeless powder, and in order to lecture students on ballistics developed a type of animation projector in 1853.   Uchatius was 38 years old and a senior artillery commander when he began to apply his singular analytic mind and perhaps even more important computational skills to solving the vexing problem of guidance and control. 

First, he discovered that the wind in Venice blew reliably from the sea about 90% of the time.  That meant balloons carrying bombs would have to be launched from ships offshore.  That, in turn, ruled out using balloons large enough to carry a human crew from the limited deck space of a ship.  He would have to use small, unmanned balloons.  That led to the problem of how to release the bombs when they got over the target.  And frankly, we don’t know exactly how he did it.  No detailed notes or drawings have survived.  We have only a couple of paragraphs after the surrender of the city on August 22 in the British Morning Chronicle:

The Soldaten Freund publishes a letter from the artillery officer Uchatius, who first proposed to subdue Venice by ballooning. From this it appears that the operations were suspended for want of a proper vessel exclusively adapted for this mode of warfare, as it became evident, after a few experiments had been made, that, as the wind blows nine times out of ten from the sea, the balloon inflation must be conducted on board ship; and this was the case on July the 15th, the occasion alluded to in a former letter, when two balloons armed with shrapnels ascended from the deck of the Volcano war steamer, and attained a distance of 3,500 fathoms in the direction of Venice; and exactly at the moment calculated upon, i.e., at the expiration of twenty-three minutes, the explosion took place. The captain of the English brig Frolic, and other persons then at Venice, testify to the extreme terror and the morale effect produced on the inhabitants.

A stop was put to further exhibitions of this kind by the necessity of the Vulcan going into docks to undergo repairs, which the writer regrets the more, as the currents of wind were for a long time favourable to his schemes. One thing is established beyond all doubt (he adds), viz., that bombs and other projectiles can be thrown from balloons at a distance of 5,000 fathoms, always provided the wind be favourable.

We do not know the size of the balloons or the weight of the explosive delivered.  Most importantly we do not know what kind of timer was used to either drop the bombs or detonate in the air, only that the device had to be adjustable to precise calculations of wind speed at the time of launch from the deck of a ship that had to maneuver to be in an ideal position. 

Secondary accounts supposedly based on observations in Venice claim that as many 200 balloons were launched in two separate operations.   That would indicate small balloons and grenade size bombs.  But it would seem to be at odds with the account authored by Uchatius in the British press.  However, some historians believe that the account in the Chronicle was garbled and referred to two sorties of swarms of small balloons, not just two single balloons.

That would also mean that the little balloons could not carry enough explosives to do much damage to buildings and property.  Instead, the use of shrapnel meant the bombs were anti-personnel weapons designed to indiscriminately kill and maim the civilian population of the city.  It was terror bombing pure and simple.

We can also credit Uchatius with the first use of drones in combat.

However terrified the Venetians were of the appearance of death from the sky, it was not enough to break their will.  The balloon bombs had no effect on the outcome of the siege.  But shortly the Austrians brought up massive heavy artillery and began pounding the city, which was already suffering from starvation and cholera epidemics, with more than a thousand rounds a day.  The old city had no ultimate choice but to surrender.

The aerial bombardment was quickly forgotten.  Neither Austria nor any other European power followed up with development.  The next military use of balloons was by the Union as artillery observation platforms in the American Civil War.  During the Franco-Prussian War and Siege of Paris in 1870 they were also used by the French to ferry personnel, messages, and supplies over enemy lines.

The first aerial bombardment from heavier than aircraft was launched by the Italians in 1911 in the Italo-Turkish War, essentially hand dropping grenades.  A year later in the First Baltic War the Bulgarians developed the first modern aerial bomb with improved aerodynamics, X-shaped tail stabilizers, and an impact detonator as well as an aircraft specifically designed as a bomber.  On October 16, 1912, they dropped two of those bombs on the Turkish railway station of KaraÄŸaç.  The Bulgarians sold plans for their bomb to the Germans which used them throughout World War I.

As for Venice, it once again came under Austrian bombing on May 24, 1915 when Italy switched to the Allies in the Great War.

The United States has become the world leader in the use of attack drones and used them extensively in lieu of boots on the ground.  It has also supplied drones and support technology to allies and surrogates.  Both side have relied heavily on drones of various sizes and configuration in the War in Ukraine.  Russian frequently deploy them to civilian targets while Ukraine has used them with great effect in selective attacks on key facilities including bridges, highways, Black Sea naval forces and in largely symbolic raids around Moscow itself.  This collage shows a fixed wing Ukranian drone and an attack in the Black Sea.

Since those first bombs fell relatively ineffectively on Venice, untold millions of tons of explosives have wrecked death and destruction from the air all around the world.

When this horror ends (because it will end)

Bodies of refugee children denied landing in Australia are recovered at sea.

Viola Wilkins, an Australian labor maven and curator of the Global Labour News & Information Facebook group posted this anonymous poem on her personal Facebook Page yesterday.  It could refer to the desperate refugees turned away, often to drown at sea, by Australia and now by the Italian Navy in the Mediterranean by order the a neo-fascist government.  And of course it applies to the cages and virtual concentrations camps ordered by the Trump Regime which has just ordered the Border Patrol, ICE, and other agencies to ignore and defy court orders that restrain their cruelty.

When this horror ends (because it will end),

we will do museums and in the showcases

there will be shoes, letters, small photos,

Cards, hair, pile of torn clothes.

And there will be school classes

that will wonder how this has been possible.

And there will be survivors who remember

“if it was human” thinking of Primo Levi.*

And there will be intellectuals, well-thinking,

of all variety that agree “never again this”

There will be TV shows where they interview our contemporaries

And there will be those who will say that they only obeyed the orders.

And there will be those who will explain they had the courage to disobey

And as always there are those too busy on the shopping channels

Who will say “we didn’t know”

And there will be grandchildren

who are going to ask their grandparents

on which side were you ?

And there will be grandparents, a few,

who will answer with truth “I was on the side of humanity”.

And there will be others who will drop their eyes and will not answer.

The Solar Eclipse—Science, Superstition, History, and Mystery

The Big Event is today.


Note—This blog began an unplanned hiatus for a week and is resuming today.  My apologies for the interruption.  My announced second post ruminating on the distressing events in Charlottesville required significant research and I struggled with my evolving interpretations and views.  I want to get it exactly right so I concentrated on that work and did not attempt to fill days with reprises of old posts, which still can require hours of re-editing and time spent selecting and captioning illustration.  Then late last week I thought that I had lost pages of work in sending a draft by e-mail from my work computer home.  I was finally able to find that and resume work.  I did get this entry together, which is obviously very tied to today’s event.  That long delayed essay on Charlottesville will run tomorrow, I promise.
The U.S. seems to be in the grips of Solar Eclipse mania, and has been all summer.  The media has been abuzz with articles showing the path, describing the best viewing points, telling how to safely view the phenomena, and explanations of the astronomical particulars. 
It is not that solar eclipses which occur when from a viewpoint on Earth the Moon seems to pass in front of the Sun briefly covering it are rare events.  Partial eclipses occur somewhere in the world a half dozen or so time a year and total eclipses once or twice.  But because the orbits of the Earth around the Sun and the Moon around the Earth they are seen rarely in the life of any individual who does not travel just to observe them.  An octogenarian might get a chance to see two in his or her life. 
The eclipse that is causing all the excitement will be visible in its totality over a much longer path in the United States than has been the case for many decades.  A swath about 70 miles wide will be darkened bisecting the Continental United States from near Portland, Oregon to Columbia South, Carolina today.  That will put it over a huge chunk of the population and within a reasonable driving distance of many more.  The entire rest of the Lower 48 states will be able to witness a partial eclipse, the sun obscured in diminishing percentage the further from the center-line of the total eclipse path.

Those who can view the Totality under clear skies will experience a dramatic event that almost never fails to be awe inspiring.  The Moon will seem to create a crescent bite out of the Sun when viewed safely through special safety lenses to protect the eyes from damage.  Over the course of several minutes the bite will grow.  At first the sun will not seem dimmed.  Even when it is mostly hidden it emits enough light to illuminate the earth.  And then, seemingly quite suddenly, the disk of the Moon will totally cover the sun.  A sudden darkness will drop like a curtain. A golden ring—the corona of the Sun—will surround the black Moon.  A little more than two and a half minutes later, depending on where the observer stands, just as suddenly a corner of the Sun will emerge with what seems like a blinding light and the darkness upon the earth will disappear in the snap of a finger.  

Much of the reporting has gone to explaining the physical details of the motions of the three orbs involved—Sun, Moon, and Earth.  Science, we are assured, knows exactly what is going on which is why this eclipse and other events thousands of years into the future can be precisely predicted as to location on Earth and time to the nanosecond.

That extremely wise man, Mark Twain, once wrote a book called A Connecticut in King Arthur’s Court.  Today we would call it science fiction, but no one had invented the term or genre yet in 1889.  In the yarn a capable New England mechanic mysteriously awakens in Camelot after a head injury.  Taken prisoner, he is sentenced to death as a sorcerer but saves himself by claiming to be responsible for a solar eclipse which he was able to calculate with the help of his trusty Almanac.  Not only is he saved, but he is elevated to King Arthur’s right hand man and made Sir Boss with the power to remake the kingdom with modern technology.

But eclipses-as-omens played a very real part in history.  The ancient Chinese believed that solar eclipses were caused by a cosmic dragon devouring the Sun and for various mysterious reasons then disgorging it.  The very word for the event—shialso meant to eat.  Around the world many cultures had similar myths.  In Korea it was fire dogs, Vietnam a toad, India the severed head of an immortal demon, the old Norse had wolves, and some North American Amerinds had serpents or the celestial turtle that carried the earth on its back. 

Nonsense, you may think, but even most of these people understood these stories as a metaphor for something mysterious and powerful—so powerful that an eclipse had to be an omen of something grand and terrible—the fall of a dynasty, the death of a king, a catastrophic loss in battle, or a natural disaster.  Both the ancient Chinese and Babylonians became careful chroniclers of sky events, especially eclipses, and today we can accurately date many historical events and the reigns of dynasties and kings by those observations.  They also became adept, without apparently understanding anything of a Copernican system, at developing precise calculations that could reliably predict future events

More than two thousand years ago, the Babylonians were able to calculate that there were 38 possible eclipses or syzygys both lunar and solar within a period of 223 months which is about 18 years.  Not quite perfect, but pretty damned good.  They especially needed these calculations because they believed a solar eclipse foretold the death of the King.  Armed with this knowledge a ruler temporarily abdicated and a substitute King placed on the throne who was given all honors and lavished with wealth until the eclipse arrived and then was quickly dispatched allowing the old king to return safely.  Clever, those Babylonians.

But this kind of record keeping and prediction may go back far earlier than can be found in Chinese scrolls or Mesopotamian clay tablets.  Archeologists recently discovered Neolithic stones at a site in Cornwall from between 3,000 and 2,500 years ago that seem to record, predict, and trace the paths of a couple of hundred years of eclipses.  Stonehenge as long been thought to be used to calculate eclipses as well.

In the New World a petroglyph on the south face of Piedra del Sol, a free-standing rock in New Mexico’s Chaco Canyon, may depict the solar corona observed during the total solar eclipse of July 11, 1097 CE.  

Clearly a lot of folks were gazing at the sun and searching for answers to big mysteries.

According to the Greek historian Herodotus on May 28, 585 BCE a solar eclipse that had been predicted by the philosopher Thales of Miletus interrupted a battle between the Medes and the Lydians causing them to immediately cease fighting and make peace in their long-running war.  How reliable Herodotus was is debated, but scientist/science fiction writer Isaac Asimov described this battle as the earliest historical event whose date is known with precision to the day and described the prediction as “the birth of science.”
Heroditus claimed that a solar eclipse during the Battle of  Halys between the Medes and the Lydians in 595 BCE stopped the battle and ended the war.  The event had accurately been predicted by the philosopher Thales.

But we sophisticates are beyond all of that myth and omen business, aren’t we.  Yet it might not take a deep analysis by a social psychologist to recognize that some of the extraordinary attention being paid to our eclipse is due to the deeply unsettling times in which we live. We find ourselves with President/king who has made sweeping changes to decades of policy in every conceivable era, who is regarded by some as a despot and/or mad man and as a literal savior by others, and who is playing nuclear chicken with a tin pot dictator.  Might not some corner of our psyches hidden behind our seeming rationality, look on the celestial event not as a science lesson or entertaining diversion but as an omen?

I once wrote in a different context:


Wheels turning within wheels—
     an astrolabe,
          Tycho’s observatory,
               gears in some fantastic machine,
                    electrons—atoms—molecules,
                        moons—planets—stars—galaxies—universes.

Today, just today—
     Point A on Wheel X, spinning urgently,
     comes to kiss Point B on Wheel Y,
     rotating on its own good time,
     for just a nano-second
     having just brushed by
     Point C on cog Z.

These precise events will come again,
    I suppose—
     you do the math if you wish.

But if I wore stars on a pointed hat,
    I might conclude that there was something
    beyond mere physics at work here.

Call it an omen, if you wish,
     or the flat hand of something Greater
     slapping us up side our
     merely mortal heads
     and scolding us—
               “Spin as you will,
                you spin not alone.”
