Look for new opportunities for action, education, community, and solidarity in and around McHenry County here every week.
Indivisible McHenry County is hosting an ICE Out for Good peaceful roadside protest rally on Sunday, January 11, from Noon to 2 p.m. on Route 31 at McCullom Lake Road, in McHenry. We will be protesting the violence and harm perpetrated by ICE, their killing of 37-year-old US citizen Renee Good in Minnesota, and their other horrendous shootings and actions. There is ample parking in the large empty parking lot at the northeast corner of Route 31 and McCullom Lake Road. Please do not park in front of operating businesses. Make sure to bring your own signs or flags or other props. This rally will go on regardless of the weather so make sure to dress warmly. And please invite your like-minded friends!
Hands Off and Out of Venezuela. The New Year ushered in the greatest Trump outrages yet with murderous attacks on small open boats and outright piracy giving way to a military attack on Venezuela, the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia, dragging them to face charges in New York not only for drug trafficking but for violations of U.S. domestic law. Trump has also extorted the country for $60 billion of crude oil to be personally “managed” by himself and sold at “fair market prices” for the benefit of the U.S. and maybe, just maybe Venezuelans. International outrage was immediate, and demonstrations have broken out across the globe including a protest in Chicago Monday night. He immediately threatened similar attacks on Columbia, Mexico, Cuba, and Iran. Even more ominously he announced “we must have Greenland” which is a realm of the Kingdom of Denmark, a long time NATO ally. Denmark flatly refuses and has put the option of invoking NATO security guarantees opening the door to a possible war with our traditional allies. One by one, other NATO nations are facing the same reality. Although I know of no immediate actions in McHenry County, I expect to hear of some at any moment. Keep plugged into your local organizations to respond quickly.
Attacks on Blue State Childcare funds. Domestically, Trump launched domestic economic terrorism on Democratic-led states—Minnesota, California, Colorado, and of course Illinois—and at-risk families and children by freezing $10 Billion in child care subsidies and other services including foster care. Families will have to choose between holding jobs or having safe, reliable care for their children. Many will be forced into poverty and eventually homelessness. Illinois remains defiant, and Attorney General Kwami Raoul will launch an immediate challenge in court. Meanwhile, service providers, agencies, and families are scrambling desperately. Expect strong local action on this front as well.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Observation—There are two important programs in McHenry County. Dr. Martin Luther King Breakfast on Monday, January 19 at the Holiday Inn NW Crystal Lake Elara Convention Center, 800 South Rt. 31 in Crystal Lake. Vegetarian breakfast served at 7:30 am, program from 8-9. Tickets are $30 for adults and $20 for youth at MLK Interfaith Prayer Breakfast 2026 | Faithbridge .
Women’s March is back with Free America in cooperation with the 50501 Movement on Tuesday, January 20 at 2 p.m. local time. “Resistance does not require purity or permission. It requires us to confront and expose power to drains its time, momentum, and resources. A year after Trump 2.0 began, his true supporters are getting paid: billionaires, big business, and big oil. The midterms will soon limit what the MAGA regime can get away with. That makes 2026 their cash-out year. We refuse. On January 20, feminists pull our labor, our money, and our consent. See you in the streets.” Local actions will be posted soon at FREE AMERICA WALKOUT Jan 20, 2026
Compassion for Campers is at Community Resource Days at Willow Crystal Lake, 100 South Main Street on the first and third Friday of every month from 10 am to 2 pm. C4C is one of over 25 agencies at Willow. C4C’s next distribution will be Friday, January 16, and then Friday, February 16. Please come and see what we are doing.
Compassion for Campers will be hard pressed to resupply many and accommodate new commers who continue to be displaced from their homes and apartments. Cold overnight temperatures and wet conditions signal new clients and shifting needs like rain ponchos, tarps and sleeping pads, hand warmers, and Mylar blankets. We can always use donations of supplies like clean and serviceable tents and sleeping bags in original bags for easy transport, clean blankets, tabletop grills, wrapped toilet paper and paper towels, and non-perishable food. Money donations are always welcome.
We need people to share leadership tasks including shopping, transportation, acknowledging donations, coordinating with other agencies and religious groups. These tasks can take a few hours a week. People with flexible schedules with some day-time availability are ideal candidates. A good way to start is to volunteer for our distribution a time or two to see if we are a good fit and stir your passion for justice and service. Interested?
